HRM- COMDDAP REFLECTION

HRM- COMDDAP SEMINAR Reflection

REFLECTION: COMDDAP SEMINAR

The day dated July 2, 2009 at exactly 1:00 pm of the very hot and stinky afternoon. IC students taking
a subject, Management Information System had given a task to attend and be a big part of the COMDDAP
Seminar at the Apo view Hotel.

Before, i was keep wondering why our facilitator had given this task for us IT/IS students as a part of our subject requirement.
Since then, as i enter the my first step in the COMDDAP Seminar, I saw many companies that had been given some promotions and tokens to get some intension
Among the students and other visitors. At every corner you can see some hardware and software companies that had also interesting suitable applications.

At exactly 2pm, we had proceeded for the next session which is the companies’ presentation of its business application and services that also had management system applied.

The first company that had shared some important discussions and orientations is the JUPITER SYSTEM, INC. facilitated by Mr. Celmer L. Santos as the company representative.

During the time of discussion, even though at the middle part it’s been a quite boring, still I can see the very high lightened means of the discussion that acquires impartment specially among us students taking a course of Bachelor of Science in Information Technology.

In looking forward to and to understand deeply about the useful application of Management Information System in many companies’ services, its major significance is to remind us that application of the IT/IS systems are very useful in their business. Especially in dealing with business transactions, manipulation and data security.

In addition, Mr. Santos had discussed also about the type of management system their company had been applied in the wide distribution of the products and merchandising. This type of system is commonly known as Enterprise Resource Information and Control Dealer Management (ERIC), in which this type of system is being use in their sales, productions and provides end-to-end shipments for auto dealers.

The next company presenter is the HP Philippines with its theme:
“Think big; Go thin, HP Thin Clients”.

HP Philippines, had also present to us the key growth Drivers of there IS applications.
*Secure data security and reliability
*Easier Management
*PC alternatives
*Virtualization
*Lower TCO
*Broadband and related compression technologies.

Furthermore, they had also introduce their newly produce product, which is the so called “Thin Client”.

Thin Client is a type of computing device without a hardware which display data and applications from remotely located servers and can be use independently as a task specific computing device with a minimal set of applications.

In the midst of discussion. They had also presented the challenges for the IT professionals and this are the following:
*Provide Information Security
- In the field of hardware and software security.
*Deployment and Maintenance
-data accuracy and reliability

By this experiences and new comprehensions, I’d realize what are the main purposes of our facilitator in giving this kind of task. It imparts me as an IT student, that Management Information System as one our major subjects, can’t also be learn in the four corners of the classroom. But to be physically and intellectually engaged in the actual and outside applications of the MIS in many companies and even among small business. The day of many irritable and stressful situations yet provide an exemplary orientations and new informations not just to the businessmans but more important for us students. Their valuable orientation provides various livelihood technologies that lead beneficiaries to live good life.

MIS- FIRST DAY REFLECTION

Reflection:
First day class in USEP.

At first, USEP for me is just one of the state universities in the country that offer my course BSIT. Due to financial needs I was force to study here and so I plainly said “Sige na lang uy..!”
However, in the first day of class dated June 15,2009 we had also discuss with other subjects, and so I realized how little my knowledge was on what this university and the IC department has store for me. With the multitude teachers/instructor, competitive students, strict but supportive administrators and staff, challenging subjects, I could say I am quite proud of being a Usepian.
USEP makes me realize my becoming in life. It does not stop catering just the cognitive faculty but the other aspects as well. Students are trained how to be responsible with the limited vacancies of time and how to be how to be adoptive to the needed changes in the country and in the institution.
In deeper sense, USEP provides a kind of education apt to fight intellectual indolence, to focus student’s mind to the vessel of discipline and most of all the Divine Providence.
For all this things, I have only three reasons “Why USEP?”
First, USEP provides for me an expensive yet quality education. Second, my rights and freedom have no room for silence; and lastly, it’s in USEP where I have met my lifetime virtue. Here, I am always learning, discovering, growing and developing.

MIS- GREEN COMPUTING

Find three(3) URL's that talk's about "green campus computing" and suggest ways how the university can adopt this concept.

Razz Short-lived Definition and Clarity about “green campus computing” Razz

Green Campus Computing used is the positive (or least negative) relationship between the physical computer and its impact to the environments in which it moves through during its journey from cradle to grave.

Green campus computing is the study and practice of using computing resources efficiently. The primary objective of such a program is to account for the triple bottom line, an expanded spectrum of values and criteria for measuring organizational (and societal) success. The goals are similar to green chemistry; reduce the use of hazardous materials, maximize energy efficiency during the product's lifetime, and promote recyclability or biodegradability of defunct products and factory waste.

Modern IT systems rely upon a complicated mix of people, networks and hardware; as such, a green computing initiative must be systemic in nature, and address increasingly sophisticated problems. Elements of such a solution may comprise items such as end user satisfaction, management restructuring, regulatory compliance, disposal of electronic waste, telecommuting, virtualization of server resources, energy use, thin client solutions, and return on investment (ROI).

The imperative for companies to take control of their power consumption, for technology and more generally, therefore remains acute. One of the most effective power management tools available in 2009 may still be simple, plain, common sense.

In addition, Green campus computing is also an environmentally responsible use of computers and related resources. Such practices include the implementation of energy-efficient central processing units (CPUs), servers and peripherals as well as reduced resource consumption and proper disposal of electronic waste (e-waste).

bounce *Terminal Servers bounce

Terminal servers have also been used in green computing methods. When using terminal servers, users connect to a central server; all of the computing is done at the server level but the end user experiences the operating system. These can be combined with thin clients, which use up to 1/8 the amount of energy of a normal workstation, resulting in a decrease of energy costs and consumption. There has been an increase in using terminal services with thin clients to create virtual labs. Examples of terminal server software include Terminal Services for Windows, the Aqua Connect Terminal Server for Mac, and the Linux Terminal Server Project (LTSP) for the Linux operating system.

bounce *Video Card bounce

A fast GPU may be the largest power consumer in a computer.
Energy efficient display options include:
• No video card - use a shared terminal, shared thin client, or desktop sharing software if display required.
• Use motherboard video output - typically low 3D performance and low power.
• Select a GPU based on average wattage or performance per watt.

bounce *Telecommuting bounce

Teleconferencing and telepresence technologies are often implemented in green computing initiatives. The advantages are many; increased worker satisfaction, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions related to travel, and increased profit margins as a result of lower overhead costs for office space, heat, lighting, etc.
Voice over IP (VoIP) reduces the telephony wiring infrastructure by sharing the existing Ethernet copper. VoIP and phone extension mobility also made Hot desking and more practical.

lol! Ways how the university can adopt to this concept...... by adopting the following practices and notions! lol!

Some common green computing practices include turning off the monitor when it's not in use or using more energy efficient monitors like LCDs instead of the traditional CRT monitors, volunteer computing or file sharing practices, virtualization of servers, using more energy efficient and less noisy cooling systems (like using liquid cooling systems instead of the conventional heat sinks and fans), temperature maintenance and regulation to reduce thermal shock wear and tear to computer parts, and increased online security measures through the use of firewalls, anti spyware and anti virus programs to reduce the increasing amount of Waste on the Internet and on other networks.

[center] The essential elements of this manner of living are the promotion and maintenance of industrial, commercial, and residential development strategies that lead to a better environment in the future; one sustained by stable, healthful communities within a clean, safe environment.

The work habits of computer users and businesses among companies and universities can be modified to minimize adverse impact on the global environment. Here are some concepts that can be taken:

* Power-down the CPU and all peripherals during extended periods of inactivity.
* Try to do computer-related tasks during contiguous, intensive blocks of time, leaving hardware off at other times.
* Power-up and power-down energy-intensive peripherals such as laser printers according to need.
* Use liquid-crystal-display (LCD) monitors rather than cathode-ray-tube (CRT) monitors.
* Use notebook computers rather than desktop computers whenever possible.
* Use the power-management features to turn off hard drives and displays after several minutes of inactivity.
* Minimize the use of paper and properly recycle waste paper.
* Dispose of e-waste according to federal, state and local regulations.
* Employ alternative energy sources for computing workstations, servers, networks and data centers.

Then there are still plenty of servers around that are very lowly utilized. Those are the ones to consolidate first. Really, just looking at the oldest technology first because they always use much more power is always a good first step.

Operating system issues

Microsoft has been heavily criticized for producing operating systems that, out of the box, are not energy efficient. Due to Microsoft's dominance of the huge desktop operating system market this may have resulted in more energy waste than any other initiative by other vendors. Microsoft claim to have improved this in Vista, though the claim is disputed. This problem has been compounded because Windows versions before Vista did not allow power management features to be configured centrally by a system administrator. This has meant that most organizations have been unable to improve this situation.

MIS- AUTOMATED ELECTION

Your thoughts on automated elections with reference to the current situation ... (1000 words)

Now days, technologies are very important to us people. These existing materials give us a gratification and satisfaction for our daily urgencies in everyday life.

As a correlation to this, regarding with the process of election last 2006, it causes such hustles, troubles and issues because of the lack assessments and some election frauds of the voters profile that brought many negative feedbacks about the voting results.

In addition, there are some possibilities of having an issue to manipulate peoples vote during election. From those who have the power or the capability considering that they are in the high position in office.
And for this coming election the government wanted to implement the new process of electoral system with the use and application of the highly evolve technologies. In consideration for the fast and well organize voting process.

This new proposed electoral system is precisely known as “Automated Election”. An Automated election system is type of a system that using appropriate technology for voting and electronic devices to count votes and canvass/consolidate results. The question now is, How secured the comelec voting system that they urge to use the automated election this 2010? I think the system can be hacked and manipulate the results by the computer experts. If the National Security systems of U.S have millions of attempts to hacked and control their system, how much more here in the Philippines.

There are also advantages and disadvantages of implementing the automated system for election. It provides efficient way for voting with less hassle. Voters cannot prolong the process of voting and lined up in a crowd. But a thought came across my mind. This could be the cause to worsen political situation. Possibilities for the candidates can hire a computer experts to hack the system and manipulate the entire votes. Unless if the system is fully secured.

But on the other hand, this new electoral system can also be cheated and deceit. We can’t be sure that about the confidentiality and security of our votes, so that we us a voter will can assure for the proper and official results of our votes without any doubt and suspicions about any foolish exploitation of our votes . Considering to the fact that this process of election can also be cheated and manipulate by others that is very disparate to win in for an office position.

By these views, I, as a student and to vote nationally for the first time, can state that whether it is manual or Automated election, the coming election will end up properly and fairly, if the existence of many election frauds will desist and hinder.

MIS- COMPANY RISK

Behind the NCCC's success as one of the leading company in the country. We can't deny that it has a must effective Management Information System, when it comes to business efficiency and services.
Now, let me share to you some important facts and details I'd gather from the interview we had conduct last July 4,2009 (Saturday) among with my co-IT students to Mr. Hervin Miklat, the NCCC- Hardware Security Supervisor.

Regarding with the question, What do you think are the risks associated with business and IT/IS change?.
The following are some of the important discussions and explanations of Mr. Hervin Miklat.

According to Sir Hervin:
“In everything we do and to pursue our goals, the case is not actually a risks but a challenge in our
management”.

In defend, Sir Hervin sight an specific examples of situations.
Example 1: Why our company has an Merchandise Management System (MMS)?.
At the start, NCCC only issue a manual receipt ti the customers. Now, pertaining to a situation that there are two competitors with the same sales and same price of products. Now, if am the customer, of course i must prefer to choose the one with fast accommodation of services compared to the other.

Risk Involve:
In that situation, the management will plan for the suitable system that can be applicable for the business proficiency.

Example 2: OS of the Management.
Comparing to the 2000 Os and 2008 OS application, of course the 2008 OS is much better to apply that the 2000 OS, because it's more advance, efficient and have many new features than the 2000 OS.

Risk Involve:
If the Management may not adopt the 2008 OS, it may lead to a possible new features that the Management will not make. If this is the case, the competency of the NCCC may lessen compared to it's other business competitors.

Example 3: Firewall
The situation is comparing the old to the latest firewall. A firewall have an Unified Technology System (UTM).

Risk Involve:
If the company will decide to change the UTM?
The first thing that the management should priorities is to upgrade their systems information because if not, it may cause restrictions to the system's security.

NOTE:
“In every IT change there is a risk involve”.

With these examples, Sir Hervin added that before any risks and decisions to pursue the management should make first a business case study and analysis to determine the most profitable ways and steps in business plans and changes.

MIS- BEST PRACTICES

ASSIGNMENT 1

Best Practices:

NCCC as a huge company and provides a large merchandising of products that may also help to up-lift the economic stability of the country today and in the vicinity of future. It is not quite easy to handle simultaneously the assets, production and distribution of the products widely.

Now, to manage contiguously and properly the systems. The management had propose the following best practices as a standard principles provided for the management security, affectivity and efficiency.

List of the Best practices amended:

*PROPER DOCUMENTATION

Proposal of legal papers that sight the objectives and goals for the possible changes that may help for the management progress and expansion. This also serves as evidence in any manipulations undergone by the management.

*PROCEDURES/STEPS

Same as with other methods and process. The NCCC adopt effective procedures before even pursuing an act upon.

Examples:
*Hosting Service
-website of NCCC hosted outside.
*Point of Sales (POS)
-acquires efficient distribution. This should be presented by a legalized documentation.
*Changes in OS application
*Upgrading of System, information and devices.

*POLOCIES

Same as trough with proceedings of any action, there are policies amended within the management to secure its volubility, sales confidentiality and efficiency.

These are some of the common practices that the NCCC management had espoused and apply in every sanction and decisions that the management should face and handle.
